Art Journaling 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Creative Expression

Have you ever felt like you needed a safe place to just let it all out—but didn’t know where to start? That’s exactly how I felt before I discovered art journaling.

If you're over 50 and looking for a gentle way to reconnect with yourself, express your emotions, and maybe even spark a little creativity again… this is your sign.

Art journaling is part self-care, part emotional release, and part playful creativity. It’s not about being an artist. It’s about giving yourself permission to explore, reflect, and just be.

What Is Art Journaling?

Think of it as a combination of writing, drawing, painting, and collage—all inside a journal. Some days it might be a splash of watercolor and a few scribbled thoughts. Other days, it could be layers of paint, torn magazine pages, and words you need to release.

What I love most? You can write something deeply personal… and then cover it with layers of color and texture. It’s healing. It’s private. And it’s yours.

Why Start an Art Journal?

  • Stress relief: Pouring your thoughts onto paper and turning them into something beautiful can be so soothing.

  • Emotional expression: It helps you process feelings like grief, anger, or anxiety in a safe, non-judgmental space.

  • Creative freedom: No rules, no pressure. Just you and your journal.

  • A deeper connection to yourself: You’ll be surprised what comes up when you start creating regularly.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

You don’t need fancy supplies. Start simple:

  • A journal with thick pages (a mixed media notebook works great)

  • Pens, markers, or crayons

  • A few paints and a brush

  • Magazines, glue stick, and scissors

Don’t worry about making it perfect. The beauty is in the process.

A Simple Way to Begin

Here’s one of my favorite beginner prompts:
“Write a letter to your younger self. What would you say to her with love and understanding?”
Once you’ve written it, add colors, shapes, or even collage over the page to transform it into something new.

Each page becomes a step toward healing, growth, and joy.
